Crown and Bridge in Prairie Village, KS

You only have one chance to make a first impression, and your smile is often the first characteristic about you that people see. But what if your smile is literally incomplete? Whether because of an accidental injury or severe decay, a missing tooth can have a dramatically negative effect on your smile.

But the problem doesn’t end there. One missing tooth can hamper your ability to speak and chew. Fortunately, there is a restorative solution. Kevin A. Cattaneo, DDS, LLC has given many of his patients healthy smiles with crown and bridge therapy.

What is a Crown?

A dental crown, or cap as they are often called, fully encases a damaged tooth. Besides restoring function to a damaged tooth, a crown can improve a tooth’s appearance or correct a tooth that is misshapen or misaligned. Crowns are also placed on dental implants to complete the look of the replacement, and on top of a tooth that has had a root canal for protection and function.

When you come to Dr. Cattaneo for a dental crown, he will carefully prep the tooth and gauge your natural tooth color, so your porcelain or ceramic crown complements your other teeth. And we’ll take an impression to provide a precise mold for the crown. While your permanent crown is fabricated in the lab, you’ll wear a temporary. After a few weeks, your permanent crown will be cemented into place.

What is a Bridge?

Bridges span the space where there are one or more missing teeth. The consequences of leaving that space open are not only cosmetic. Just one missing tooth may cause your other teeth to move, leading to a bad bite, gum disease or TMJ disorder.

More often than not, a bridge is held in place by crowns that are placed over the teeth, or abutments, that sit on either side of the missing ones. The replacement tooth, called a pontic, is attached to these crowns. Once in place, a bridge gives your smile the natural look you want.
